I have 3 oscars and one convict in a 125g with dual aquaclear 110s and 2 plecos. Is this aquarium going to be a mess and need a lot of water changes???
Oh yes very much so, once they get close to adult size. 2 oscars in a 125 is good long term. Maybe the convict would work but not a third oscar or pleco. Just a LOT of waste. But like I said, closer to adult size.
any advice on what i could change to my filteration so it will take on the large bio load? I wanted to construct a sump under my stand but its only enough room to put a ten gallon aquarium into or connect 2 fifteen gallon rubbermaid containers and i'm working on a college student budget.
If you do a large sump, you might be able to get away with it, but you might have aggression issues with 3 oscars instead of 2, or unless you have all 3 males etc etc etc. A 10 gallon aquarium won't do anything. You really need a much larger aquarium period or get rid of an oscar and the pleco. I would wait until the oscars are adults however and see which ones have aggression towards each other.
I understand that they will change in attitude as they grow but for now it appears to be 2 females and a male but the smaller pleco will be going to my friend soon so im not worried about that issue.
Oh didn't see 2 plecos. Get rid of the other one too. They are very messy. How old are the oscars? They will start aggression around 8-10" when they begin to start maturing from my understanding ... Don't know how you would be able to tell sex though unless you have seen their tubes.
The bioload will not be an issue for the two AC110s if properly setup and maintained. The problem will be particle waste, you'll likely have to do weekly gravel vacs and may need to clean the filters every two weeks to keep up.
I think if you keep up with good water changes and cleaning you will be okay. Remember oscars forced to live in less than pristine condition is a directly associated with "Hole In The Head".
