just noticed this on one of my fish... now he's been in an overly aggressive tank with lava rock so i've thought it might just be scratches but then I noticed the white growth on the tail and i'm not sure is that ick? I know the pics are hard to see but it's at the base of his/her anal fin and right on the top of the head and a little by the gills

ok that's good is it an infection that you can tell or just scratches like i thought originally?

I couldn't tell you to be honest. I did get a pair of convicts a while back from a forum member and the female had a few marks just like this. I just made sure their water was super clean ( 2 x 40% ) water changes a week for the first month or so. Fed them good food as well. She's been fine ever since. I now do 50% a week and they're already raising their second batch of fry.:headbang2

Lol honestly I have no idea... I think it's a cross of lots of breeds i was told they were actually wild caught cichlids in Idaho... well not really wild caught it's a hot spring that someone planted them in for some reason and they've flourished i just know it's a black with orange fins African cichlid. Not the best answer but it's an answer haha

Looks more like an abrasion.
Treat the tank with some salt and melafix.
Good luck
