I HAVE 8 STINGRAYS NOW. GOT A NEW ONE A FEW DAYS AGO. SHE IS IN HER OWN TANK, NO OTHER RAYS. THERE ARE A FEW FISH IN THE TANK.
THIS NEW RAY, SPENDS MOST OF HER DAY FLOATING AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. AT NIGHT IM NOT SURE. SHE IS EATING WELL. REALLY WELL. DOESNT SEEM TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD A RAY THAT SPENDS SO MUCH TIME AT THE TOP OF THE TANK FLOATING IN THE BUBBLES. SHE EVEN STICKS HER EYES OUT THE TOP OF THE WATER WHEN SHE DOES IT...

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK...

TANK LEVELS ARE FINE. ALL TESTING LOOKS GOOD. NITRITE LEVEL HAS GONE UP A SMALL AMOUNT SINCE SHE WAS PUT IN, BUT NOT ALOT. NOT SURE IF SHE IS STRESSING THE TANK. BUT DONT KNOW. LIKE I SAID, NEVER HAD ONE SPEND THIS MUCH TIME AT THE TOP.

HAVE HAD THEM DO IT, AND SWIM UP TO THE TOP, BUT NOT SPEND MOST OF THE DAY DOING IT

THANKS

2. I have a ray in a ray-only tank that spends almost all day on the top playing in the outlet of an FX5. She certainly isn't being picked on, she just seems to like it. I wouldn't worry if she's eating and shows no visible signs of being nipped.

ya, no signs of any problems... just seems to like the bubbles and its rt next to the filter outlet..
just wanted to check to see what other ray owners had to say about it.

Nitrite is like .2
a 20% water change will fix that. I just dont want to do it rt now since she has only been here two days.

Just checking if the floating at the top is normal or not.

Hey bcfd144, my Male motoro ray does the same thing, for the first 2 months spent most of his time either searching for food on the bottom or was burried in the sand. Now he spends a big portion of his time hovering on top of the tank over top of the bubblers i have in the tank.

Not to worry its normal, my guy loves to eat and will come down when i put food in.

Just thought i would add my 5 cents worth.

i would say ammonia, nitrite, or lack of oxygen

if the ray is sticking its eyes out of the water then something is wrong

rays are bottom dwellers not top swimmers JMO

Novaman1967,
yep, that is what mine does. Hangs out over the bubbles. Seems to love it.

Vamptrev,
Nitrates, nitrites and ammonia are good. I have two airstones in the tank, pleanty of oxygen plus a power head that is air-raiting 50% of its capacity. So I would say plenty of air.. Doesnt stick her eyes out for a long period, think its just the bubbler pushing her up and she is just swimming around.
See seems to enjoy it. Im not seeing anything wrong rt off the bat...
Just never had one do this before....

she spends time on the bottom to.. just seems to like floating in the bubbles also.

add a large air diffuser to an air pump and put that in the bottom. i would put the ray with the others till the nitrite goes down. nitrate is acceptable in low doses, but nitrite with a stingray especially can be quite lethal.
