i am thinkin of getting a golden dorado.. the question is...

the biggest tank i can get is 10'Lx2.5'Wx3'H... that should be above 500g...
can i keep this fish for life in that tank...???

The question is how big do they get in the aquarium..... I am not aware of anyone keeping one past the 30 inch mark. However the fishing record is what? Like 89lbs or something like that? IF It can't make it for life it should be pretty darn close. Dorado seem very aware of thier surroundings and are somewhat flexable so 2.5 wide should serve it proper for a very long time.

The other question is are you even going to feed it enough to have it grow to the potential 3+ foot? Most hobbyists would feed enough to maintain life after the 2 foot mark but not enough for the fish to continue to grow.....

I'm currently keeping a shoal of 5 and was planning on 10 x 4 for life.

Curious to hear others' thoughts on this.......

i agree with DB...that tank will last a very long time.
ive never actually seen one in captivity get anywhere close to the size of their wild counterparts.
however,i think 2.5 foot will not be wide enough for life in captivity.
its going to be really cramp in there when the dorado gets to 2 feet,if it gets there.

close enough answer that i want to hear...
i was hoping someone would say a factual statement like they don't grow more than 3/4th (30")their potential size (something like that) in a home aquarium setting like most of the large monster out there... but "am not aware of anyone keeping one past the 30 inch mark" seems good enough...
i've been itching to get one...

5 dorados in a 10x4 tank... seems doable... tank is big enough... but the AGGRESSION is what i'm worried about... but you'll never know until you try... The "What IFs" will make you crazy. ;)

I had two previosly and think issue have is the 2.5w which I don't really see as much of a problem. The biggest I am aware of in captivity is just over 20". I know of one that has topped out at 18" in a 900g. there is a fishing record of one nearly 4' it's preserved in a glass cabinet.

I would think with a higher number of them the aggresion would decrease. I am not sure howmany you could put in that tank though.

i'm only gonna get one since i already got 6pbass, 4IT dats, 4 bichirs, 1 jar arowana (11 inches) and 4 armatus... so far pretty peaceful, no major aggression... it already looks like i'm gonna have issues with the addition of another monster aggression (the dorado) but I'll never know until i try...

ANY THOUGHTS...?

Thoughts.....

The Armatus are going to need more room then the Dorado. Dorado seem to be very good with boundries, the Armatus have been known to spook, dart, and smash into things.

I personally will never trust Dats and Armatus together again. I had IT and AT with an Armatus that were all fine for like 10 months. Came home to an Armatus swimming all messed up and evidence of a fight Amongst the IT and Armatus. Both were dead within a few days. Wouldn't trust a Jar in there either. The 20+ inch one I had killed many, many fish. I have heard of a case where someone got a Jar and Dorado of similar size to cohab temporarely but the end result was constant fighting resulting in seperation.

I agree 110% with trying. The "what ifs will make you crazy". You never know till you try. The hard part is deciding when enough is enough. I have a tank now with 5 Dorado, 4 Armatus, and several other Characins that's been fine for a few weeks but after several nipped fins I'm gonna start removing the Dorado a few at a time till the shoal weakens enough that they loose thier newfound attitude.

You should post up some pics..... Sounds like a great tank!!!

i've been juggling my thoughts on this one.. no matter how much i want to try to obtain a dorado, i don't think it is a wise idea.. i don't want to have too many tanks in my house.. pretty much just 2 or 3: the main tank, grow out tank, and the feeder tank.. i had similar situations before with the midas/red devil at 7" on a 75g.. that was an evil little fish who kept most of the tank for himself (more than half) and kept all the other bigger fish to one little corner with scales all messed up and stressed out... those fish were 2 oscars 10", 1pacu 18", silver aro 16".. dont want similar situation to happen.. although i think the orino pbass will keep everybody in check...
the jardini is the only potential problem... i don't think i'm gonna try that idea now.. i'll prolly get the black or silver aro...

here's some pics of the grow out tank.. not pretty at all too much algae.. but the water is clear..hehehe
