Tank is 450 gallons, 2" pvc pipe. There will be 3 of these pvc overflows. pump is about 2500 GPH @ 10 ft head. Sump will be about 100 gallons.

I would be worried about it possibly draining the tank during a power outage with the overflow at the bottom of the tank. Maybe I am looking at it wrong?

Loving it... but the vent... as mentioned... isn't really needed but if you are still interested in using it... I would personally move it to the outside of the loop just to make sure that your able to a) cut back on the noise via hanging a small piece of mesh down the tube (makes it vitually silent) and b) ensures that any air that happens into the elbow doesn't stay there (bubbles don't sink and have a hard time going against a current)

thats what the vent at the top is for.. when the pump stops the overflows will continue to flow untill the water level gets below the top elbow.. then (thanks to the vent) the water will stop flowing... if the vent wasnt there it would without a doubt drain the whole tank if/when the power goes out..

going with a smaller vent hole will lessen the "flushing" noise however it will also take longer to break the syphon... i see a lil trial and error in your future.. to keep your head from exploding i suggest using painters tape try different size vent holes.. once you find the size that stops the syphon quickly and does not sound like a toilet is constantly fushing..

You only need to worry about ti if you have a sealed exit to the pipe or if other bends are added to the pipe. I've had it set up both way (with vent and without) and have not had issues with a continuous siphon. Granted mine are designed a touch different and I have my drain directly into open air above my mech filtration. Mine might not hold the siphon due to the long horizontal flow.. shrug who knows. as a safety measure the vent is up to the job. Bass gives goo advice about the mesh.. you can also use things like air tubing and even string to help quiet the gushing sound. That style of overflow is BY FAR my favorite. If you midify the design a bit, you can incorporate two overflows into one downpipe and even add cross sections to different water level drainages... ie like mine.
