Went to lfs today and saw this fish that looked different than pictus I'm use to seeing. Spotting is smaller than the other fish that it was in with. I've heard of pictus between different areas collected can have this variation but I'm not a pictus expert. Can someone confirm? Thanks

It's a pictus, but as you said there are two variants, one has smaller spotting that can fade away as it gets larger, it also is reported to grow larger than the other variant. So the other variant stays smaller with more bold markings. I don't remember the two locations. thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter I believe does though.

Ok I just wasn't completely sure as I am just getting into fourline pims and now this fish. Just know it stuck out to me in the shop so I picked him up to be with my fourline group. Thanks

Four lines and pictus behave much different ime and grow to quite different sizes in overall mass. Pictus wouldn't be able to hold its own in a fight imo and they're a schooling fish, so might wanna get more..

Colombia and Peru I believe are the two locals
I own a trio of Peruvians and have yet to grow past the the 3.5in. mark, but I've seen bigger ones (4 maybe 4.5in.).
Where as Colobians I've seen grow up close to 6in.

Yes I may get 2 more on Monday. Just the others don't look like this one.

I wanted to say Peru was one but wasn't sure.

Hey if you don't then you get two variants which is cool still ;)

Agree with everything said above. The fish is a pictus, looks like of Colombian variety. If it stuck out then the rest could have been Peruvians.

Depending on the tank setup, I'd get 6 to 12+.
