my dad has a 55 gallon tank with a jd about 3/4 inches long a electric yellow about 3 inches long and and a ahli about 4 inches maybe 3 1/2...well he called me today and he said he put a new branch type thing i there for them to hide in about 2 weeks ago and he said his jd will not leave it not even to eat so he thought he was sick ...so i went and checked it out and the electric yellow guards the branch/cave thing wont let nothing near it not even the pleco and the jd stays inside i finally got him to come out when i threw some brine shrimp in there but he came out the electric yellow went in the jd grabbed the shrimp went back in and the electric yellow went back to guarding..what can be going on? i wouldnt think a jd would mate with a african cichlid...do they?
is this possible??

That's pretty awkward, electric yellows are mouth brooders and they are African. No way they can spawn together. And yeah, can you get us pics or a video?
could the jd be getting bullied? i know yellow labs are docile, but im wondering if they are fighting over territory.
if anything it can be a war btwn the electric yellow and the jd do vs the ahli thats the only other thing i can think of cus the second the ahli goes near them the eletric yellow attacts the ahli.. ill try n get pix or some vid on it
id say its a territorial issue-that jd shouldnt really be in with the africans-but if it works for you then great! lol.. i personally would take him out and put him in another tank-esp. if they are not letting him eat, or are keeping him cornered all the time. Best of luck to ya and the fish!
I think it is probably a territory thing, add in more hiding spaces and see what happens. Yes electric yellows are prob. more docile then many other Africans, but I have seen some pretty agressive ones fight over territory so it honestly would not suprise me if he was bullying the JD.
I ve had JD with Africans before and it went great for awhile but eventually the JD got beat up. It works for some it doesn't work for others. Add more hiding areas and it may work out.

he has a bunch of hiding places for them but the elec yellow is not bullying the jd the ahli trys to bother the jd(i guess you can say) and it looks as if the electric yellow is helping the jd even by lip locking with the ahli lol its really a wierd seen if you see it it kinda looks like the elec yellow is defending the jd
That's one of the strangest things I have heard in recent times! This sure needs a pic or a video.
lol well maybe the yellow is defending the JD-maybe she sees him and his spot as hers and will fight the Ahli over it.. africans liplock quite a bit fighting over what they see as their territory. If i were you, i would rearrange the tank. try moving the JD's spot to a different area-i would be curious to see if the yellow lab goes over there and acts as guard for him again.
I would rearrange it all just to see if the yellow is still sticking up for the JD out of curiosity. Then again, i dont lead a very exciting life lol
