I want to make some profit in breeding my cichlids. I have a nice 4 inch or close enough Green Terror male. I also have a 2 and a half inch Blue Acara female. I know their capable of breeding and certain of their sex because they ahve bred together, not meant to but well it happened. I also have 14 one inch rokteil severums in a 20 long for now till they get a bit bigger. I want to get a female terror for my male and a male acara for my female. So I will have some breeding pairs. And with 14 severums I'm sure I will get at least 1 pair if not many more pairs that will breed.

Now to the profit part. Will I actually make any profit? I know I will need grow out tanks, lots I know. I'm planning on using the clear rubbermaid tubs with just simple sponge filters and a small heater. I mean I know I wont like overset the initial cost of buyin the heaters and sponge filters and plastic tubs. But I should make some. I bought the severums at aquabid for a dollar each, so the person made at least 10 bucks. I know it won't be alot but with 3 different kinds of fish I should be able to make something. And if not that's fine too I love my cichlids.

I'm planning on having the main tank for each of the pairs of course. I will syphon out the fry after about a week or so after they have been free-swimming for just a bit. I will put the tiny fry in like a 2 gallon or less plastic tub. And when the parents lay eggs again in about 2-3 weeks I will transfer the first batch of fry to a second tub and so on till I have 3 batches going at a single time per type of cichlid. And the third tub will be my selling tub that I will obviously sell from.

Well any suggestions will help. I wasn't sure where to post this either so sorry if it's like off-topic somehow.

I doubt you will make a large profit, of course you would have to figure fish cost, food cost, electricity, time... if you find that price then price your fish, they would cost more than anyone would pay....

also I would post in breeding section for more information. Also you will have to find your market to sell all these fish...

LFS pay pennies for theyre fish so they wont pay much cash out for yours. private sales is too slow. when I have breeds happen, I grow them out to an inch and then bring them in to my local LFS where I know the manager and he will take my fish as trade for some fish I have chosen of equal or lesser value. because after all he dosent pay much for his fish in the first place. if you could understand what LFS pay for stock and the mark up, its disgusting. if you can find a distributor (good luck with that) open a LFS, but dont try to compete with a fish farm from florida or malaysia, it dont make cents lol

no way will you make money IMO

Like already stated LFS buy from wholesalers who get them from breeders or harvesters by the thousands. No way can you compete with their efficiency. It would be like trying to open a convenience store next to a super walmart.

They only way you could make any profit would be to sell them to private keepers......BUT seriously how many people in your area are looking for green terrors? You would be lucky to sell 10 babies.
