I want to make some profit in breeding my cichlids. I have a nice 4 inch or close enough Green Terror male. I also have a 2 and a half inch Blue Acara female. I know their capable of breeding and certain of their sex because they ahve bred together, not meant to but well it happened. I also have 14 one inch rokteil severums in a 20 long for now till they get a bit bigger. I want to get a female terror for my male and a male acara for my female. So I will have some breeding pairs. And with 14 severums I'm sure I will get at least 1 pair if not many more pairs that will breed.

Now to the profit part. Will I actually make any profit? I know I will need grow out tanks, lots I know. I'm planning on using the clear rubbermaid tubs with just simple sponge filters and a small heater. I mean I know I wont like overset the initial cost of buyin the heaters and sponge filters and plastic tubs. But I should make some. I bought the severums at aquabid for a dollar each, so the person made at least 10 bucks. I know it won't be alot but with 3 different kinds of fish I should be able to make something. And if not that's fine too I love my cichlids.

I'm planning on having the main tank for each of the pairs of course. I will syphon out the fry after about a week or so after they have been free-swimming for just a bit. I will put the tiny fry in like a 2 gallon or less plastic tub. And when the parents lay eggs again in about 2-3 weeks I will transfer the first batch of fry to a second tub and so on till I have 3 batches going at a single time per type of cichlid. And the third tub will be my selling tub that I will obviously sell from.

Well any suggestions will help. I wasn't sure where to post this either so sorry if it's like off-topic somehow.

I posted this here cause Mike said it would be a good idea, don't get all mad people cause it's posted twice.

Packer, I'm sorry to say you have little to no chance unless your raising a rare species or a high quality, stable high bred. The $10 you spent on fry recently would be less than the food it took to raise them.

Very seldom will you see tank bred fish go for the dollars you would need to break even. Only the shysters try to hide the tank raised part amongst the vendors. I personaly experianced this on a pirahna buy.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

yeah. its near impossible to make money raising fry, unless you are doing it on a HUGE scale.

raise 'em anyway (if you have an LFS willing to take them off your hand). its a cool hobby, and you'll probably get some free fish food and/or fish out of the bargain.

you won't get rich, though.
