Hello my friend gave me this roasted seaweed he said was gross. I've been planning on buying some Nori for my flagtail and SD's but not sure if this is the same thing. Does anybody know if this is ok to give as a treat?

The ingredients are organic seaweed, organic sunflower oil, organic sesame oil, sea salt.

I wouldn't use that one. In the picture below you can see the two I regularly have been using for quite a while and my fish (and I) love them. There are other brands that are good as well, and I use them when I find them but they are hit and miss. And there are at least 3 different colors.
I did get one with oil (by accident) before and I did not try it because I knew it would be terrible for water quality.
I buy mine in Chinatown's small stores, but other stores like H-Mart sell them too. No oil, just roasted laver (=nori).
Photos, 2 types of algae (nori) that I use (cut in small strips), greedy fishes eating them in various tanks!

My general rule is that I don't normally eat fish food and I don't offer human food to my fish. This particular product is one that I taste-tested once when given some by a co-worker...not really sure what I did to offend him, but there you go.

Anyways, I believe this stuff is an attempt by some enterprising manufacturer to find a secondary market for a product that is better suited for use as a biodegradable insulation material, or perhaps as an environmentally-safe backstop to capture and contain stray bullets at a firing range. Yes, I tasted it...which is not really an endorsement, since I have also tasted an assortment of insects prepared in various ways, the raw stomach-lining of a couple of African antelope, and an assortment of other "goodies"...but I just didn't see the point of a second bite.

My dog would not touch it; this is an animal who has eaten poop in the past. When I offered it to him...my goodness, the look he gave me...

Edited to add: on a serious note, the comment about low protein content of this stuff makes me want to try one of the oil-free versions as a foodstuff for some Goodeid livebearers I keep. I have read on numerous occasions that high protein diets can cause problems in these fish...usually associated with birth of over-sized young...and I have noticed a higher-than normal rate of anal prolapse in these fish, usually in females at or near the end of pregnancy. You'd be surprised how difficult it can be to find a low-protein fish food, when they all trumpet how wonderfully high their protein contents are. This stuff might be just the ticket; like a commercially-produced version of the hair algae that many Goodeids love so much.

Thank you! Your posts are why I wanted to try nori in the first place but haven't been able to find it at supermarkets. I didn't know it was all roasted though so was probably looking in the wrong section lol.
