Hi there, I got myself an extreme aquarium. Homebuilt by LFS-owner, Length: 160cm/63inch Depth: 50cm/20inch and Heigth..........120cm/47inch
Glass thickness on front/back panels: 20mm.........side panels: 10mm

Is this safe???

Yeah I agree. Seems odd that someone would make a tank with different glass thickness on the sides then the front and back.

Yeah....its kinda sick. But how can the pressure be the same on the side panels when its only 20 inch/50cm wide?...............ok, pressure......we might discuss the STRESS on the side panels instead....or am I out there so to speak?

With only 20" from seam to seam the side panel is less likely to bow under pressure and crack, as opposed to the longer span of the front or back panels. In any case that is quite odd. My concern would lie in that the front and back have a much thinner butt seam where it attaches to the sides. I've got a 4'Lx4'Hxx18"W tank, but the sides are made of 3/4" glass just like the front back and bottom. Previous owner had it in service???

Yes....or so he said. I never saw it with water cause the bottom were leaking and was to be fixed. However....the corners in the aquarium (i dont now really how u say it "over there") where the back and front meets the side panels are enforced with triangular glass pillars from bottom to top and glued in. So the silicon...ehhh...."lining" is very robust, thick, strong.

i would test it first, but it seems sketchy.
