I have a piece of driftwood in my 50 breeder and it has what looks like fuzz growing over most of it. Does anyone know if it is just the wood from the water, or some kind of algae? Whatever it is, it is not very appealing. The wood has been in the tank over 2 months, and I soaked it for almost a week before i put it in the tank. My water still has a tint from it. Any suggestions?

If it's white, it's a harmless fungus brought in on the wood. If it's brown, just normal growth.. The brownish tint (tannins leaching from the wood) should clear up as long as you keep up on your water changes.

The white stuff can be brushed off after awhile. Mine had it and after the cycle period I brushed it off and it hasnt come back.

if it's a dark green/black it could be beard algae, I honestly think it's pretty but a lot of people get bent up over it.. pictures would help identify it.

Thanks a lot for the info. I looked at some pictures, and it appears to be beard algae. I'll take the wood out and scrub it off. Hopefully that will take care of it for a while. Thanks again.
