I built a sump for my 135 reef ready tank (I use it for cichlids). The sump is two 20 gallon tubs connected with a 9" tube (tube is 4" wide - no siphon, tubs drilled in the sides). I built two wet/dry filters (one for each side) out of sterilite latch boxes and a soldering iron. The mechanical area is 12.7 quarts followed by a 24 quart (6 gallon) box of pot scrubbers and bio balls in each. Both work great. Two Mag 7's for the return.

I am now getting a 210 gallon tank (which means the 135 is going) and wondering if I need to change the sump at all. The new tank has the same size holes and overflows at both ends, so all that is fine. What parts can I keep and which do I need to upgrade? If I have to build a new one it will be the same, simple concept, only larger (except It'll probably be one piece - it's only two pieces to accommodate the funky stand for the 135 - but it'll fit great under the 210 as is).

I'd use the 135 underneath the 210 as the sump, you could plant half of it for nitrate removal, and section off the other side for hardware and bio media.
It would also offer insurance against overflow. The 20 gallon sump is a bit undersized for 2 mag 7s and a 210gal tank.

it's a forty gallon sump (two 20 gallon tubs) And I can't keep the 135. It's being traded for the 210, my friend needed a six foot tank after he moved, so I'm getting lucky. Anyway, is 40 gallons too small? And does that mean the filters and pumps are ok? It would be nice if I didn't need to buy new pumps. A new sump or filter is way cheaper.
