Hello all,

I have a 180gal tank up and running for two months now. It is fully cycled and I have been playing with the stock list a bit. Until I stumbled upon discus. These fish are amazing. They are beautiful and have such character! My plan was to keep something with my arowana.
All my fish are still small so I can remove some that do not fit in so well.

I have
1 7" silver arowana
3 3" tinfoil barbs
3 1" clown loach
2 angel fish
2 geo surinamensis
1 3" cuckoo syno
1 6" tiger shovelnose
2 3" discuss

I know this may be over doing it but I thought I could still remove some while they are still young to accommodate growth.

The thing is I am now so enthralled with discuss that I want to do whatever it takes to keep them. Temperment wise all these fish seem to get along great. They are all peaceful. The only major problem I see in raising these fish together are the tinfoil barbs. They tend to be very messy and active, stealing all the food before other fish get to it.

I guess what I am asking here is should I take out the tinfoil barbs to allow other fish (mainly the discus) to feed more easily? Or am I going down a road of destruction?

Keep in mind this tank is mainly a show tank and I do not wish to breed discus. If overstock is an issue I can remove the barbs, the syno, the clown loaches to allow other fish to be healthy.

Thanks for you advice
Larry

I can see 2 fish in that tank that are going to have a feast the aro and the tsn.

You will be quite shocked at how wide those two fish can open their mouths and the size of fish they can eat.

The catfish and the tinfoils definitely need to go if you plan on keeping the discus. Aside from the possibility of the catfish going after the discus, tinfoils are way too active for a discus tank. I have never kept an arowana so I can't make a suggestion there, but it seems like they might get aggressive toward something like discus? I could be wrong.

You will still have to feed very well because discus tend to be a bit slower eaters than angels and geos, so the discus are often pushed out of the way at feeding time. Also, discus do better in groups... minimum of 4, but 6 would be better.

There's a big argument among discus hobbyists about angels and discus together. I personally never had a problem as long as you keep them well-fed.

Keep the tank warm and do regular water changes.
