Is this too small for the oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My oscar is about 13” and is in a 75, he didn’t get along with my Midas when I transferred them to the 210. Honestly the tank is way too small for him, the tanks is 48”x18” foot print. So unless that tank is 4x2x2 120 US gallons I wouldn’t. If you have another, larger tank for the oscar maybe.

Hello; You are asking an opinion question. Some may say 4 foot tank is fine and many have Oscars in one. A 4ft tank may be only 55 gallons.
Others have stated a 75 gallon tank is the minimum they consider for a lone Oscar.
Additional others will favor even larger tanks.

I did not open the link so excuse the questions.
Is the tank free or very cheap?
How big is the Oscar now?
Do you have a larger tank available other than the 4 ft?
Do you want to keep an Oscar?

The tank is relatively cheap.
They say the oscar is about 25cm currently.
I don't have a larger tank, unfortunately.
I would love to keep the oscar, but if the tank isn't big enough for him then I will obviously try to rehome it.

Thanks!

You will definitely find a lot of different opinions on this. Like any other fish some oscars will get larger than other. I have seen some adults that I would absolutely not keep in a 75 but others that I think would be ok. Ask the seller what size he got it and how long he has had it. Having some idea of its age may help you get some good guesses as to whether or not it is headed to jumbo status.

If the tank is 55, it is definitely too small to keep an Oscar for life. if it is 75/90/120, it is not perfect, but it will do. As others have stated, this is pretty much an opinion issue. Seems to me like since the Oscar is going with the tank, he will probably stay in whatever size tank that is no matter where he goes, so I'd say he's better off in the hands of an MFK poster who will seek advice and know how to keep up with maintenance, than with most people who buy cheap tanks.

Looks like it is a 55g tank. Will see if I can pick it/him up and either try to rehome him or get a larger tank.
