$750,000 on a fish tank!!!! I know what business I need to be in. I guess we can hope that the trend brings more people into protecting these resources. After all, these people clearly have the money, and possibly connections, to help make make more of a difference.

I don't see how its bad for the hobby. More people keeping fish, more fish coming in, more exposure to fish keeping...all seem like good things to me.

People spend money on things they like. If they have more money, they're going to spend more money.

If I buy a ferrari, is it bad for ford?

actually, don't we all do the same thing on a smaller and cheaper scale? if money were no object I would love to have something like that and have someone come and clean my tank. I'll bet there are very few of us who do wc's, clean the glass and filters, etc because it's fun. we do it cause it needs to be done if we want great looking tanks and healthy fish.

Every tank I've seen that looked like the ones in your link also had a person that came once a week to clean them. They were all at commercial places too, not residental.

So it could expose aquariums to people, but also misslead them into thinking they can have a super awesome tank with no effert. Then again most people give up once their first tank dies, or actually look into what they did wrong an how to fix it.

That was kind of my question. I support responsible exposure of the hobby whenever it can be achieved. But does this trend lean more towards things like Paris Hilton and chihuahuas, Disney and dalmations, more trendy than true interest. I am not sure that is why I ask.

I think its bad cause the people dont care at all for the fish the they just want it to look nice I think that as soon as it stops looking nice they will stop they dont care for the comfort or well being for the fish "Don't ask me the names of the fish," as one guy said how can you have fish and not know what they are I dont like the idea but I supppose that the fish are well taken care of

.. I wanna be the guy who gets payed $5000 a month to look after Mr. Joe's fish

I think its going to help keep a few high end fish retailer/service establishments in business.other that that almost no effect.Sounds like there is no real interest in the fish, its just a status symbol and decoration.

While I can agree to some extent about owners not caring, there was also a guy that was very passionate about his fish. You didn't mention him though....I also think that coming to a conclusion about "rich" people and fish after hearing from just a few interviews would be like pulling 6 random people from here to represent more common fish keepers. I'm pretty sure that several would be people that are new to the hobby or perhaps just disagree with "common" practice when it comes to aquaria. It would quite possibly mean easy misrepresentation of our end.
