I'm getting my first wet dry sump for a new tank. I've been fish keeping for over 10 years and never had a wet dry just cannisters. Is this a good deal? Will it plus a Fluval FX5 be enough for a 253 gallon tank? Does anyone know of a better wet dry in this price range or better? Sorry to sound like a noob.

Here's the link. It's the Model 400 for $359.00

Well IMO all wetdrys are a ripoff unless you DIY!

For instance I made a wetdry for my 750 for
materials ($30) + media ($40) + pump ($80) = $150

I'm not sure I want to make my first one. Will you build one for me too? Just kidding, it's ok, I don't mind spending the $ this time around as long as I get a good W/D and maybe I'll eventually feel comfortable enough to make my own. I'm a W/D/sump virgin you know lol.

I'm in the same boat. My issue is noise, and many of the alternatives people have promoted (like the emperor 400 I have) make too much of it (which could be becuase it's old - I got it used - or didn't set it up properly or whateever. Anyway, I have a lot of tanks, and something that would do more than one at a whack or a big one (my biggest is 120G) QUIETLY would be great. How hard is it to make a SILENT one? Thanks, everyone!

$30 worth of materials? That's it? You using an old tank for the sump? $150 is pretty low for a tank that size. I'm trying to make one myself.

I got an aqua one multi trickle filter witch you can get with one or two towers. It is made of molded plastic and the single tower one has 3 boxs witch has 4 drip trays and 4 corse pads it can hold alot of bio-media and big enough to hold any size heater and most return pumps. It sits inside the cabinet and hardly makes any noise at all.

We have that model on our 300 gallon tank currently stocked with two large pacu and two large oscars. It has provided excellent biological filtration for the last year and a half. In our ProClear system, the mechanical component is neglible, considering that the water at the top of the tank enters the overflow box and goes out to the wet/dry. We've got a CA-6000 pump (1560 gph) in the wet/dry returning the water to the tank. Depending on how heavily stocked your tank will be, the FX-5 at 925 gph may be enough for mechanical filtration. I wouldn't rely on getting much mechanical filtration from the ProClear. We have an FX-5 with a 40 Watt UV sterilizer for our backup redundant filtration. We have a totally separate mechanical filtration system consisting of two spa filters run by a Hammerhead pump 5800 gph which provides extreme mechanical filtration for our bare floor tank. Feces and debris is quickly whisked away -- so there is nothing to vacuum out of the tank.

Wet/dry filters provide excellent biological filtration for large tanks. I will say that I was disappointed in how simple the ProClear is. As a newbie, I couldn't picture the system (even with all the pictures). We'll never buy another one, because now we KNOW that we can easily build a bigger better one should we ever have need for another one.

That's a good price--the site where I got mine is $389 http://www.globalpets.com/SPD/ProCl...ilter-With-Prefilter--3A400000-1127856596.jsp

One word of caution: if the filter is being shipped to you, make sure you carefully inspect the tank before you sign the receipt and accept the shipment from the truck driver. My tank had several cracks which I didn't find until after I received it. I ended up having to buy another tank. The trucking company later reimbursed me, but Global Pets was not nice to deal with. They acted as if it was all my fault that I didn't notice that their product was cracked when it was delivered to me. It was crazy that I had a cracked tank and had to buy another tank before I had a workable wet/dry system. Hopefully, PetSolutions is nicer to deal with:)
