I got it at petsmart for 6.99. This fish is a fast grower only 2 months old. Can anyone tell if it is a male or a female????

Sorry i couldnt get a better pic

There is is no way physically to tell if its a BG JD. looks like a male, but need to show a better pic.

A Blue Gene Dempsey looks completely like a Standard Dempsey but has a recessive gene to create Blue offspring...

as mentioned, there is no way to visually tell a Blue Gene Dempsey from a Standard Dempsey...

If you paid $7 for it from a chain store, it definitely is not a Blue Gene... it is a Standard Dempsey...

I just thought because he has such good color which you cant see very well in my pictures it might be something special. He is the only dark colored jack with brilliant blues that I have seen in that store.

At any rate I like it and I hope that these pictures might be good enough to tell if its male or female.

Thanks for your input

nice dempsey ! one of my old ones looked just like yours but with darker blue on an almost black background,i thought it was a male judging by the size of it but 'he' laid eggs lol

More than likely female with that amount of blue below the eye and on the cheek. VERY nice fish BTW!

Ty Very Much!!!!!!

really nice jd, i'm going to go out on a limb and say male because of the lack of color on the jaw.

Do you have any advice food a specific type or brand of food that will bring out better colors in my Jack

I feed mine Omega One Color Enhancing Pellets and Hikari Vitamin encapsulated Frozen Bloodworms and small pieces of regular old nightcrawlers from my yard as a treat:thumbsup:
