is two RES better then one for the turtle

I had 2 Red eared slider babys one didn't make it while the other one did an after awhile he actually started doing this whining like noise at night we eventually bought another one and he totally stopped doing it. So at least in my case I think mine was/is happier with another turtle. I may even end up getting 2 more to put in with em not 100% on that.

Unless you have a large tank, stick with one. Single turtles tend to do just as well without other turtles as they do with. If you have the room, by all means get another. I actually encourage it if you have the space, but don't cramp 2 in a smaller tank just to give one company. A lone turtle with room will be much happier than 2 with not enough room.

That whining noise was most likely a respiratory infection. Your lucky that the turtle improved and survived without any habitat adjustments or antibiotics. A good rule of thumb is that if your turtle makes any noises that you would expect from a dog, there is something very wrong. They don't whine.

It was not a respiratory infection I thought it was but he just makes noise. I consulted with a couple vets to check out about it and they said it is a possibility that its a respiratory infection but since he didn't show a single sign other then making noise that wasn't even close to a wheezing sound that it wasn't necessary to take him in. To this day he still makes noise on occasion some times its more of a whine and some times its more of a chirp of sorts. hes just an oddball but I love him.

Thats good. I suppose it possible that he makes a noise with no problems, but Ive just never heard of it. Ive witnessed big sulcatta torts and other tortoises make noises but never an aquatic turtle. He sounds like he has a good home.

I've had one for 11years. She had a companion, however she was very anoyed by it.
p.s. pre-formed ponds are awesome inclosures. I had a 165g pond just sitting in my dinning room. lots of room and she loves it!

I've done the best I can for him. And trust me I was truly worried about him but in my looking around I did find a few other people who had RES that made noise with no problem. I suppose its just a rare occasion still worries me a little bit but I can be a worry wart some times. He does seam alot happier tho now that he has a companion again.
In my opinion if you can house more then one I say at least get a male and female if possible, I have heard to try and stay away from multiple males as sometimes they will become territorial, there's less of a chance of it happening if they were raised together but you never know.

Turtles don't get lonely and can live perfectly happy/healthy lives without a roomate.

x2. They are not social animals and although they get along fine together, it does not benefit the turtle in any way. It usually is worse for it since it now has less space and needs to compete for food.

Right there it is...

It might make you feel better for your turtle to have a roommate, but it won't matter to your turtle... But doubling the amount of turtles means you are doubling the need for space/resources as well as doubling the waste produced. Which essentially turns out to be doubling the work required from you.

I see no reason not to keep the second turtle... provided you are willing to responsibly do so...

But adding the second turtle without increasing the input will be worse off for both turtles...
