Just out of curiosity, I have my lights on a timer. I was wondering if anyone has their heater on a timer. In real life water heats and cools do to the sun. Is it worth putting your heater on a timer with your lights to more realisticly similate the real world? Would this benefit a fish's life cycle or screw up the biological system of your aquarium? Or would it screw up how your heater works with the constant on and off?

Opinions?

Large bodies of water do not fluctuate much during a 24 hour period.

It would depend entirely on the speed of heat loss from your tank, if your fish would suffer.

Tropical fish benefit from a stable temperature. While small bodies of water exposed to the sun heat/cool on a daily basis, most rivers and lakes actually fluctuate very little over the course of the day. Seasonal variations in temperature can be beneficial for subtropical and temperate fish, but not for most tropical fish.
