I visited a tank recently where the rays are going bonkers and rasping the bottom and walls with their mouth, putting some serious deep scratches all over. Is this common?
My Leo pup bangs rocks agianst the tank bottom, it was more noisy in the glass tank than the acrylic tank they are in now. I don't think mine are big enough yet to do any damage to the tank.
I assume you have an acrylic tank with sand? It this is true, I would assume the sand particles that get stuck under their skin scratches the acrylic as they move.
So far my rays haven't done any noticeable damage to my acrylic, however one of the big girls does find it amusing to bite onto the silicone on my windows and see how far back she can pull it before it snaps back
My tank has bite marks on the sides. This is the main reason it is so hard to ship large rays. You can clip the stinger but you can't keep them from chewing a hole in the bottom of the bag. If I ship anything over 10" I use cardboard between bottom of double bags or pond liner.
