At what size can you sex these guys , my largest one i thought was a male but it has dug a pit and chases everyone away except my male mextico blue so my guess is female unless two males can pair up.
Both male and female istlanum can be very aggressive and territorial. The red female shown in the profile was mistaken for a male by me because it was the largest, most aggressive of the group I had purchased. She was eventually sold to someone as a female and she laid eggs. The male killed her and the spawn shortly after, as usual. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160496
I'd say females will show more red in the flanks. The male I have now never showed any red but the females in his batch did show some red. Males begin to develop a bit of a nuchal hump early too. Istlanum also tend to have their tubes out a good bit too which can help sex them.
