Isn't it AMAZING what and old fashioned air pump can still do??

That's awesome. Im a firm believer in air driven stuff. That's incredible flow, I suspect theres more to it than just an old fashioned air pump. I know a lot of it has to do with the sizing of the airlift chamber so maybe you don't need crazy cfm or psi

Ive made pvc air lifts but im lucky to get maybe 20gph out of 1/2" pvc.

I've made some pretty impressive airlifts like these. Great flow as well with sufficient water depth. Here is one I made that I got to lift about 12 inches before it fizzed out.. at 4 inches it flowed amazing. my airpump had 4 outlets thus the reason for the t fittings.

And that's just a normal airpump, if the tank is in a room where nobody will feel disturbed hook a big compressor up and your tank will turn into a waterfall haha

Smaller bubbles move more water. I don't run stones because they clog and I am lazy. The longer the tube and the smaller the bubbles the more water you can move.

Nice designs guys! Heck I STARTED my first tank (at 13yrs old) with a sponge filter. Of course even then it was cichlids (Jack Dempseys in a 10 gallon). I didn't really know about testing water or maintaining parameters, but I never really lost a fish to anything other than aggression.

Whats funny is how the "old" always come back NEW again. Heck I even just went and ordered a COUPLE of ATI sponge filters to put in my current tanks. I'm actually thinking about dropping back a bit from the whole cannister and HOB filtration systems to a more subtle and SIMPLE tank setup. I miss how it was before we MADE it complicated...LOL.

I like the NEW SHINY cannisters, but there's just something about SIMPLICITY sometimes....
