Hello,
First off, I'm new to the group (joined today), but not to the hobby. I'm hoping to be an asset and make new local and abroad connections.
Straight to the point = In search for 3 to 6 *females only*, Protomelas Fenestratus Nkanda "Yellow Tiger Hap".
The story = 4 out of the 8years in this hobby I have had Protomelas Fenestratus Nkanda (a Yellow Tiger Hap) on my "list" of groups to assume and breed for distribution. Now, I have searched online, stores, homes all with no luck...I gave up and pretty much forgot about the species. Not one of America's big distributors had any (almost positive, but would love to be wronged) and I could only find one German site offering a male.
Last week I found (yet ignorantly owned, lol) my male stud. The damn fish was in my possession for almost 6 months, but I had not just mistaken him for a different species, but I thought he was a she as well. He quickly started to color up just last week at 5" long. I found him in another hobbiest's garage one city over, who told me it was a female Tangerine Tiger. I wasn't convinced. The stripes we're just like a Taiwan Reef (like "H's"), not like a Tiger's stripes. Confusing me more was that his new colors had me thinking maybe an Imperial Steveni Tigress. Moreover, the anal fin wasn't the same as the Steveni...so, hybrid is what I thought.
I'm not a fan of hybrids, so I posted him on a Facebook group along with other males that I grew out. That's when someone had I.D.'ed it. Sure enough...I think...I had me a Yellow Tiger...I truly hope so...lol.
Not an hour pasted that I posted the re-homing ad on Facebook and I had at least 10 hits from local dudes trying to be the first to pick him up...at 11 at freaking night. Imagine it, 1 hour with that many looking to buy this fish that had no color one week prior. Could a 4 to 6 female, with 1 male group breed enough to meet the demand? Anyhow, then next morning I lied and said it sold. I'm not selling something that I was still looking for...if that makes sense.
(Side note = Please speak up if you have reason to believe it's species other wise. I cringe at the thought of producing unnatural hybrids. No hard feelings to any who like hybrids and OB's. It's just not for me.)
So, back to the story. First thing after faking his sale (shhhh) my thoughts were, "how or where did the guy I bought it from get it?". Because, he told me it was a Tangerine and he breeds Tangerines. I hit him up and he said that just prior to my purchasing it, he bought three large, mixed groups of fish. One from Live Fish Direct and two from different local breeders. He assumed that it was one of his, but knowing now that it's not, it must have came from one of the three places. Live Fish doesn't have them. One of the breeders clarified today that it wasn't his and the other breeder has been M.I.A. for a couple months...FIGURES!!!
Finally, any help that leads me to some females would be greatly appreciated and will be rewarded with a couple of Yellow Tiger juvis from the first batch hatched. Or how ever you might allow me to show my appreciation. Thanks all
P.S. I have some groups that I breed and sell. I will be posting pics soon of the studs in those groups, so let me know if you like what you see and want to add some of my fish to your tank. Thanks again !
