I have my ticket reservation confirmed. I fly to Mexico on the 19th of feb. and get back on 22nd. I will be going with the intent of collecting the "red" form of ex-Ciclasoma istlanum. It just has more red than other varieties, but not all red. According to Juan Miguel Artigas Azas, in his opinion, the most colorful of all types, from this location, as printed in Cichlid yearbook, volume 3, I think. Anyway, I have a friend in Mex. city who is taking me, we have all permitts in order on both sides of the border. So wish me luck, and let me know if you are interested? I am shooting at trying to bring back up to 50 pcs, and from 3-4 inches. But beggers cant be choosers, so what ever comes out, will keep, unless we catch enough were I can sort what I am looking for. Again wish us luck as I have come back empty handed 1st time I went for beani, scored beani on second trip, caught a handful of white beani on third trip. My friend has caught and example for me and I have verified, as Istlanum, so now he knows were to take me for them. Will keep all informed.

You are a lucky man. What kind of permits did you need? I wanna go on vacation somewhere in march/april, was gonna go to Europe, but it failed. I wouldn't mind a collecting trip!!! Whats the cost too if you don't mind me asking? This is a very exciting exploration for the hobby.

Once I get back, I do want to go for more Beani, the "white" beani from Rio Tepic, upstream ofcourse. I wanted to do the beani in Dec. but holidays, and Jan. had me busy. So now have my tickets for Islanum, in 2 weeks. Maybe in Mid-late March go for last Beani collecting (white ones), before airplane tickets go up for Spring Break.

sounds like a good time... Im goin to Mexico on the 15 for a week, not for collecting though... I would love to try but I have no room anyways. Good luck with your trip!!

$45 for US Fish and Wildlife, $350 for airplane tickets, about $100 in gas money for friend to drive me, about $60 for guy to use cast net, about $100 excess weight on Airline (50 fish each in own bag with water weighs a good amount), was charged about $85 when brought back beani from Mazatlan. papers in Mex, no charge, this time, since friend exports fish officialy. and about $200 for food, hotel, misc. Total: $800 approx. Not cheap. With about $1,000.00 USD you should be good. Remeber, I have connections so things can go up, plus if you stay longer, means more food and more days in hotel!

Not too bad, cheaper than Europe! Still a lot to go collect fish though. It's gotta be a crazy adventure!!
