So while I was concerned with getting my new aquidens diadema and metae setup up, I just noticed my red istlanum spawning in one of my other tanks. This is a young pair that I received in august. I should have known is was imminent being that 3 of the group of eight have been taken out in the last few weeks. My question is, for those that have spawned them before is, what should be my next step? The male hasnt been over rough with her, all things considered, but I have read that that can change once the spawn is over. Would it be a good idea to divide the tank? I dont want to end up with a dead female, the other 2 taken out were females, shes the last one. Thanks in advance. Here they are, pics taken a couple of days ago...View attachment 994677View attachment 994678

I have never kept them, but a divider will work, or a sturdy enough hiding place only she can fit in....if enough size between them, do you also have target fish to possibly divert his attention?

There are still 3 other males and believe it or not, a rotkeil severum that I put in there a few months back that took a beating in another one of my tanks and the istlanum were small enough that he could recover, he is now the boss of the tank, none of them mess with him lol.

That sounds like enough to help them pair up.I would add a bunch more hiding places, I hate the way divider looks in the tank, if you divide then you have to also find tank space for the others, they look great...wonder if they can work in a community of tough fish in a big enough tank....

Well, another male taken out while I was at work. Still have the eggs, so we shall see. I moved the other male out already and will be moving the rotkeil, dont want him to be next!

No experience with mine spawning yet (still tiny) but I hear a divider is the way to go. I had the pleasure of speaking with Rusty Wessel this weekend at aqua mania and he also suggested this method. He said he has kept both red and greens and even if it is a 300 gallon tank the male will most likely kill the female.
