istlanum tank size?

I had a male that was 10" and he would have been an unhappy camper in a 55 solo. He was part of a pair that was unhappy in a 75...so much so that he killed the 6+" female in it.

Bare minimum doesnt cut it with these fish. They need room, even if they only get around 10" or so.

No problem. Watch out. My pair killed 30 of their siblings over a few days once they bonded. They are nasty at small sizes.

They exploded in size once I put them in my 265g (in the video). Good Luck.

Sometimes a pair simply can't get along, no matter the size of the tank... A 55 or 75 could work for a divided pair...

Matt

55 for a pair divided? WOW...the last thing I would expect to hear from you is some bull*hit bare minimum answer. Talk about cramped quarters and unable to thrive.

Arent you the public defense attorney for all things living and a healthy thriving environment?...or do you just play that on MFK?...maybe you just offer sound, legit advice for the pacifist, calm, peaceful cichlids?

You must never have had a full grown pair or seen the tenacity of istlanum.

For a pair, a 55 (and I personally think a 75 is not sufficient for full grown pair) is BS unless its just some breeding factory and you dont want the best for them.

Dayum! I would have simply said I disagree. Lol!! I do agree with you though on the 75 being small for the istlanum though, for a small fish they're quite active and patrol often so I do think they need some more room. When it comes to housing fish it all comes down to knowing the fish and their habits so you can make appropiate housing accomodations. Unfortunately when it comes to istlanum info. is far and few between and often you need the help of fellow keepers with personal experience. I'd personally suggest a 6 foot long tank as a minimum for a pair, this way the male can patrol and the female has a place to hide if need be.

I have what I believe is a female, and when I picked her up, she was in a tank with a bunch of baby fish, and got along just fine.

I take her home, put her in her own tank.. now I can't even put my hand in the tank without her biting me! She's a definite glass banger!

I would say 75 MINIMUM for ONLY 1.

Not sure why you're attacking me personally...not that I care.:chillpill:

I'm actually one of the last people to be a douche / Nazi about tank size...been keeping cichlids long enough to have kept and/or bred just about everything, including instlanum.

I've grown out a couple of groups of istlanum (from fry)...tried to keep them in 6' tanks alone and with other CAs...and always found them to be extremely rough on each other.

Why devote a huge tank to a pair of fish that aren't gonna get along (more often than not) no matter the tank that you put them in? Hence the divider approach.

Best luck I've had was a pair in a divided 2'x2'x1' that I moved up to a divided 75g. Both were well-filtered (dump filters) and received water changes daily from my drip system.

I've found instlanum to be boring fish compared to alternatives, frankly. I'm sure that won't stop them from being the next fad fish again soon, though.

I'm done with this thead...feel free to argue among yourselves,
