Since getting my soon to be monsters (RTC, Cichla, and Pacu) I have been working effortlessly to get some ideas drawn up on how I want the stock tank that will house them for a couple years to be. Well, I have started this thread to record my ideas and get input from other indoor pond keepers. So with that, let this begin!

Plan #1

Equipment:
350 Gallon Stock Tank (6' round x 24" deep)
2x 50-60 Gallon Garbage Cans
4x 4' Double Bulb Shop Lights
2x 4,500gph pumps
8x 3" bulkheads
PVC/SPA FLEX
Egg Crate
Pot Scrubbies (LOTS!)
Cinder Blocks
2x 500w Titanium Heaters w/digital electronic remotes
Mesh Screen
Plywood
2x4's
Fiberglass Insulation
lava rock

The Plan:
Build a plywood and 2x4" wooden "box" to encase the 6' round stock tank. Line the inside between the plywood and tank with insulation to help keep heat in, which in short will allow the heaters to not kick on as much. Have 2x 3" bulkheads drilled into the side of the tank and lead too the 2x 4,500+gph pumps (one on each side), which will in turn lead to the top of the garbage cans (sitting on cinder blocks) and will meet a large square shaped spray bar. The water will filter through the pot scrubbies and exit 3x 3" bulkheads...one return pipe for top, middle, and bottom of the water column. The grabage cans will have lava rock in the bottom to help aid in biological filtration based on how porous the rock itself is, it will be seperated by egg crate. There will be 4x 4' shop lights connected together and suspending from the ceiling for light. Since Peacock Bass are such good jumpers, I am designing a "lid" for this pond which will consist of 2x4"s and koi mesh.

This will be in my room, so I will be running a de-humidifier to help cut down on how much condensation there will be in the air from the open tank.

I will try to get some pictures of my drawing up tomorrow to show you exactly what I mean.

Hope to get some advice on whether this will work or not, I based most of it off Andy's (mqtandy) original pond.

Sounds good, but why a spray bar? why not have a drip plate. The drip plate will be a lot easier to unclog. Why not get an 8ft diameter dreampond show tank the liner is 60 mil(although it is pvc liner so indoors only or it will carode from uv light) and will hold 750 gallons at least and would probably cost as much as a stock tank.

How about using the two cans in a row. The first can be used as a settling tank (and house the heaters) then to the bio end.

If you use the lava rock, place it in large mesh bag so it can be removed easily. Lava rock is famous for clogging and placing it at the bottom of a can near the return might be risky. I would ditch the lava rock and get bio-balls. A clean out on the bottom of the can(s) will make rinsing detritus out fast and easy. You can also flush the bio-balls out from time to time.
