Im still kinda new to the cichla game! My Azul that I had for a couples week has gone from eating to straight being itchy. Seems like I might have ick starting up. I did a 25% WC with some epsom salt. The azul had white blotches near the dorsal that go down to tail, and that went away with the WC. And I am still dealing with a itchy azul. he comes up to the tank like it wants to eat.then just swims away trying to scratch itself with its pectoral fins. all the other fish i have in the the tank are fine. I know cichla are very sensitive to water quality and change. Are azul more sensitive or somthing???? I have pleizona in there and eating like a beast and no signs of sickness. My tank temp is around 86-90*(is it too high???)
been doing small WC and some salt seem more active when I did WC so temp maybe to high??. Last night I added prazi-pro didnt seem to do much, but i did not have enough for a full dosage so I hoping for luck with WC's

any thoughts on this??? I dont wanna loose my azul!!!

I think you're doing everything right so far. Temp is good, make sure your salt was added at 2 teaspoons to every gallon, I was told to keep lights off, and reduce feeding to a mininum. Make sure you have good water flow and surface agitation to increase oxygen in the water as high temp water holds less oxygen. If you're going to do water changes remember to salt that new water with 2 tsp for every gallon.

You shouldn't use Epsom salt, that is different from the salt you need, any type of non iodized sodium chloride. Epson salt is magnesium sulphate, won't do anything for ich. I think that's only recommended for bloat.

And keep your heater on! You need the temp high enough to speed up the life cycle of the ich, so it can die off quicker. The higher the temp the quicker the ich will go away.

Ease off on the salt if it is showing signs of improvement.

Hey kendragon, how do you feel about regularly adding aquarium salt to a pbass tank? Does it help reduce parasites and infections?

For regular everyday tonic use, low levels of salt is good but most likely won't help against parasites. Wouldn't recommend keeping high levels of salt regularly for pbass. Salt may hurt some tetras, catfish,......and may be dangerous when used in conjunction with medication. Salt will also cause zeolite (if you have it in your filter) to release ammonia back into the tank.

Alright, so far it doesnt twitch as much and starting to eat a little. I noticed every time i feed him a pellet. he will start twitching and get irritated by itch. Ill try to get some pics soon. The azul was a recent addition. when I first put him in my tank. he was fine, and eating good. actually he barely got onto pellets. previous owner was starving him to get onto pellets. Does transition to another food stress them out??

heres a pic when i got em005.JPG

Near the dorsal fins there are like white patches now. that go down to tail. seems like it came back.

I can't see this picture well, but are there any ich cysts on him? Looks more like scrapes, possibly from the ich bothering him.
