What do you guys feed your fish?.....

The reason i ask, is that ever since i moved to my new house, my snakeheads have been eating whatever I can catch around here...

"Here" is Japan and I have rice paddies, rivers and forests very close by.

We have an abundance of frogs, small lizards, crayfish, grasshoppers and other insects, that they have been eating with relish.
Together with pellets, shrimps and frozen fish, I figure it's a nice varied diet.

A varied diet is great! Do you quarantine your live food? If not, it's just a matter of time before they give your Snakehead a disease.

Hey Viking, I'm in Japan too. Where abouts?
I was born in Chiba, I now live and work in Hokkaido, For the Hokkaido Fish and wetlands section of the town hall.

Luckily, as part of my job, I am within throwing distance of the sea on one side and the marsh/wetlands on the other.

And yup, just like you am feeding my snakes a great local natural diet.
I also mix in pellets here and there too, but they are rarely taken.

small salamanders make for a pretty meaty treat from our wetlands.

And for my Dwarf puffer tank, I am able to go out and get a pretty much unlimited amount of wild "Amano shrimp" for a tank clean up team.
While in the tank, they are also gutloaded and then when grown moved into the snakeheads tanks as treats.

Nature is an awesome thing huh!

but watch out for diseases, guys...

( the diets are awesome, in any case )

i live near a brackish lake so i do catch plenty of shrimps and mudskippers for my oscar i also sometimes go up to a river and get shrimp, guppies and crays for them to but mainly i use good old hikari

I have to admit that I ain't too worried about infections...the fish are frozen and thus should pose little danger.
As for the frogs and lizards, I am not aware of any diseases that can be transmitted, but of cause i could be wrong;)

@Tokyogasmask, I'm in Saitama, pretty far from Hokkaido.
Been here 12 years or so and I have to say that I am so envious of your job!..must be great!?
