Since I've started anything new in the fishkeeping hobby. I've not added anything new to my stock and it's been a year now. I keep on seeing all of my friends with discus and other new fish, its starting to give me the urge to get a new tank up and running!

I have a 110gallon tank. I'd like to start with discus, it's something I wanted to do ages ago but I kept on having other issues popping up so never got down to doing it.

How many discus can I have in a 110? I don't like to overstocked tanks too.

rule of thumb is 10G per discus, but from IMO 8-9 is fine because of couple things, your tank is 110G if you fill it all the way up but who does that. Also, it's good to leave extra space for them grow out and in case you decide put some decoration or tank mates. I would love to see it when its up running.

good luck,

good luck,

i was thinking of planting the tank before i add discus to it. i've always had bare tanks with no deco because monster fish just destroy everything in sight dont they. this time i want something beautiful and interesting. so im thinking of planting the tank first then adding fish in due time

sounds like a plan, but if your going with a planted tank, you would be better off with fish at least 4". small discus require many feedings per day and daily large wc's which may not be good for plants. I have 8 adults in a 120 gal. I could add more but I like giving them some room. 6-8 in your tank would be great and would leave you with room for a school of tetras or cories.

Do you think I should grow them out in a bare tank first then when they are a bit more chunky and juvies move them into the planted tank? I could always set up the tank aside & plan etc whilst I'm growing them out.

if your going with small fish then yes. bb would be the best way to keep the tank clean. totally bare tank will work, but I think any fish is more comfortable with some type of structure to relate to. maybe a few pcs. of wood or even a potted plant.
