So as some of you may know my pump died on my sump so I had to rigg up temporary filtration. So I finally have the money to replace it. I am trying to decide if I should just get a new pump and leave the same setup, buy a canister and set that up; or get a new pump and do something different.

I liked sumps because they where easy to clean and had consent water level in the display. I now run a drip system so the constant water level is no longer a value. I like the canister for the silent running but dis like the cleaning. SO I was thinking of a above tank filter or maybe a modular filtration system.

So my question for all of you fx5 owners is how often do you realistically clean it? how much work and time is involved? I think a single fx 5 will filter my 220 if I add in some power heads for more movement.

If I go with the above tank filter I think I can make it silent due to the intake and return both being below the water line, but I worry about having enough head room to clean it, there is only like 3 to 4 ft of room above the tank. We all know the truth, that if its hard to do it will get done less likely.

Finally My thought of using a few 5 gallon buckets with water tight lids for modular filtration basically first on would be filled with filter pads and drain to the second one filled with bio and then pumped back to the tank. I only fear that it will be impossible to clean the bio media if I ever needed to.

I have a FX5 on my 90 gallon and it heavily stocked. I clean it out every second month. It only takes me about 15 minutes, not really a big deal at all.

For a 220 gallon, you might be better off just replacing you return pump on the sump. I personally would not use a FX5 on a tank lager than 150 gallons

I have been coming to the same conclusion. While I am not convinced that the fx5 wouldn't do its job of biological filtration, I am convinced I don't want to tear it apart every month or so to clean it. I would also I have to buy bio matrix so that I could ensure enough capacity for the given space.

So now I am leaning towards modular filtration or over head.
