i have a heater that is rated for a 50 gal and im using on a 55
i have to put it on 89 to keep the tank at 85
any explanation??

How old is your heater? What are you measuring the temp. with? Sometimes the thermometers are faulty. If I were you, I would first check all of the equipment or just go ahead and buy another heater. Stealth heaters are very well made and reliable. The cost for a heater for your 55 gallon shouldn't cost more than $20. Just download the price from Petsmarts website and Petsmart will honor it at the store. Hope this helps, The Doctor.
 
stealths are great i use them in every one of my tanks, but there more like 30

Yeah, I was just checking the price at Petsmart, http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754055. I was sure I paid around $20.00 for the 250 watt Stealths. Now I see that they are $30 and above. Can anyone confirm for me that the price has increased? However, Stealth heaters are the only one I use. The Doctor.
 
i just bought 2 more of them yesterday and it was almost 80 bucks, at petsmart, and it was for a 50, and a 100 watt, but you get what you pay for
