So I have a python hose that I've been using for the last 13 years. 50'. The way everyone in my household has been using it is:
Turn on the sink with the sink fixture thing pulled down, drain like that, push the thing back up to put water back in.

Now I'm seeing that people either turn the sink off to keep draining or pulling the pipe off the fixture to drain it into the shower.

Have I wasted thousands of gallons of sink water unnecessarily?

I usually turn sink on until it’s siphoning the water and draining and then turn it off. It is slower way this way though.

Ah I see, perhaps I haven't then, for my purposes

When I first started using one I did the same thing of leaving the water on. Later I discovered you didn't need to have the water on. That's when I started disconnecting the hose from the faucet pump and using the water to feed my outside plants.
