if the electric eel is just a big knife fish, could a full grown aba-aba knife produce a similar shock? what about a black dolphin mormyid

i know, ive seen pics of what they can do
but if they were capable of producing a shock they would be the most bad *** freashwater fish on earth imo

They produce a very light electric shock.. I u want a fish that shocks... I suggest the e-eel...

I would love to get one, but they are not available...

Aba aba 'knives' aren't even in the gymnotiform family, they're actually a type of mormyrid. So they use they're electric capabilities for things like preception and communication. They do not really "shock," other fish for defense/hunting purposes, because they've already got their badass temper and bite to take care of that.

electric eels have a very specialized electricity producing organ, so I doubt any other electro sensing fish would be able to produce the same shock even if it was 20 feet long.

I think the difference between aba aba and e-eel, is the e-eel needs its shocking powers to stun its prey. The aba is a very aggressive predatory fish, so it doesn't need to depend on shocking abilities. I'm not positive but i think the aba's abilities only go as far as using electrical pulses to help it hunt, not to actually stun its prey.

As for the morymid, I believe thy only have abilities to use electricity to locate food as well.

It sounds to me like you want to be afraid to stick your hand in the tank. lol

If I had a 6 foot aba aba and a 6 foot electric eel, I'd be far more nervous sticking my hand in the aba aba's tank... electric eels tend to become very tame in captivity, and rarely, if ever, discharge electricity. They handfeed, and some nutters like to pet their eels (not worth the risk, but hey, I never hear about them getting shocked while playing with the eels). Aba abas just bite anything that comes into the tank... taht smile is just so deceptive, they'll chomp your hand just as readily as they'll chomp a feeder, a tankmate, a siphon, a filter, a heater... anything for that matter. Kinda like an amphiuma - if it's interesting, bite it.
