 I have a pair of jack dempsey's/ male and female and a pair of Green terrors/male and female, in a 35 gallon tank. Got them when they were not quite 2 inches each. they all got along great.
Now, the two males are constantly squaring of at each other, gills flaring and such. There only about 3 inches now. And both of them seem to push the females to the back of the tank and try to keep them there always.

So why the sudden change in their behaviour??

im not an expert but i would say they are starting to get territorial, i would say probably seperate them to aviod any casualities. any pics?

Territorial dispute in a small tank.

First of all the tank is way too small for those four fish. They are begining to get territorial. The closer they get to sexual maturity the more problems you are likely to have.

You need a 55 for each pair, thats one 55 for the GTs and one 55 for the JDs. To have those two breeding in a tank I would imagine something about 6' long with cover and something in the middle to break line of sight. For now you may either want to get rid of the two you least like or change around the tank to break up territories (be short lived) or upgrade to something able to hold all the fish together. Or of course get two 55's

hmmm.................... maybe a bigger tank is in order...?

Thanks for the response's ,guess I'll have to take the plunge and get a bigger tank. 125 gallon is what I'm thinking. I just cant choose to give either of them up.
I didn't think they would become aggressive so early, at that size.

Yup, they begin getting aggro at a small size. And the closer to sexual maturity they reach the more aggro they will become. And then of course if they do actually spawn then they will be extremely aggressive towards tankmates and often towards each other too. But good luck with your fish, the 125 sounds like a good idea.
