Besides the beard what do you look for? Especially at smaller sizes when beard is less apparent

Spots all over the body if beard is faint or not there, the male has spangles all over the body lie the one above but the fmales will not and in my experience females are just much darked than the males

Males will also generally have longer and pointier dorsal fins; females' fins will be rounder....
