Alright so i recently rescued them both the JD was living in the 55 gal that had so many hard water stains u couldnt see threw it. I got them both for free from the owner cleaned up the tank its up running and cycled with the JD in it. I have 2 questions what tank mate should i get for the jd. The next question is do you think he will live much longer hes seems to be fine right now but the previous owner said he had him in their for about 6 or 7 months without ever cleaning the tank and never fed him. Hes about 3 maybe 4 inches.

Is it one fish or two? A little confused.

A 6-7 month old 3-4" JD is very stunted. Such a fish would probably live 60-75% the lifespan of a normal JD and depending on the severity of the stunting, it would only reach 1/2 to 3/4 a normal JD's size, which is normally 8-10". I am not 100% certain on average lifespans, but I believe it is normally about 12-15 years, so expect to have it for at least another 6-8 years minimum would be my guess.

If there are two JDs, I would skip any tankmates in a 55 normally, but if they are only going to be 5-6" fish, you might get away with adding a convict or firemouth for a cichlid. You can always add a catfish in the 4-8" range. Dithers are great, but JDs don't generally tend to need them as they are not often very shy.
