Last night, for the second time in roughly 6-8 weeks my female laid eggs. The first time I was unaware of what was happening when the male became overtly aggressive towards the female to the point he had eaten away most of her fins and had even left an open wound the size of a half dollar on her side just below her dorsal fin. I had no choice but to place a divider in the tank (55 gals) to offer her refuge. Although still a bit reclusive she laid eggs about 6-7 days later. Not knowing what to do, after some internet research and learning that the male still had to fertilize thye eggs I removed the divider. To my dismay the male began his relentless attacks on the female again so I had to replace the divider.

Since then the female has recovered quite well. I have left the divider in the tank to insure she has time needed to grow all her fins back and for the open wound to heal. You can hardly tell she was injured now.

So, now that we are up to date..... after discovering that the male has to fertilize the eggs AFTER they have been laid I removed the divider this morning under careful watch. Thus far no cause for alarm as they appear to get along just fine like they had for roughly 7-8 months that they have been together.

The eggs appear to have been fertilized due to the fact they have not gotten hard and white like they did shortly after being laid the last time. My general reasoning in posting is to have somewhere to seek information and advice so that hopefully I may see teh eggs hatch and be able to raise and retain the fry. Last time I was frantically searching the web to try to avoid losing the eggs but was unable to locate any sites before the eggs were no longer any good.

Any interaction and advice is greatly appreciated as I am very excited. I had a couple of JD's as a chiold and have now had several for the last 4 years but this is my first breeding.

My male is almost 8" and the female is about 3/4" smaller. She was introduced back in November after losing what I presume now to be a second male. I have had the male for about 4 years and as of losing a smaller unknown cichlid last week they share the tank with only a 13" pleco (who rarely leaves his cave under a rock) and a small 2" catfish (who also is rarely seen as he lives in the hollow of a decoration rock.

My JDs took care of their 186 fry very well. I stopped breeding them after one batch because it is very hard to get rid of 186 fry. My only suggestion would be to remove the pleco and catfish, I'm sure they would love some caviar.

Thus far, and actually neve have the pleco or the catfish posed any problems. The pleco rarely leaves his cave and rarely if ever does the catfish even show himself. As a matter of fact, I introduced the cat and a mate over 7 months ago and was only about a month ago that I even realized I still had one left in the tank. I thought they had both been eaten, but while cleaning the tank and removing everything (it had gotten extremely dirty due to the fact I was traveling and my buddy that was feeding them was over-feeding) the one catfish that was left fell out the bottom of the rock that he "lives" in.

OK, Saturday evening, almost 8:00 pm..... I am starting to see some of the eggs turn hard and white which I know means they are dead/no good. The others still remain a greyish color but I don't see any change in their look that might signify any kind of growth within the eggs.

Also both the male and female continue to be well behaved toward each other easing concerns that I may have to separate them again.

Thats good hopefully the other times were just practice for the real thing. What are you going to do with all the fry?

:( Sunday night.....it appears all the eggs have now died. I can only assume that I didn't remove the divider from between them in the proper amount of time for the male to fertilize them.

The pair still seem to ge betting along, but I've observed a strange behavior. They both continue to move gravel about, clearing out a hole like the female did while preparing to lay her eggs. They have completely buried a small decorative wood stump and have buried close to half of an ornamental castle that's about 8-9" high. They have literally picked up and moved two plastic plants (watching that was pretty cool) and have removed all of the gravel down to the under-gravel filter in a hole approximately 6" in diameter. Is there anything I can derive from this?

Did they fry hatch and you not notice? Or is it possible you have 2 females? Post some pics of the setup and maybe somebody can sight a flaw? Your male could also be fertle? Just thinking outloud.

No, I definitely have a male/female pair. I had them separated when she first laid the eggs due to his mortally aggressive posture with her. I did not remove the divider until maybe 12-14 hours after the eggs were laid because I didn't know any better. I only found this website the following morning after the eggs were laid. Anyways, all the eggs are still there, they have just turned white and hardened and have begun to be eaten by thye female.

My male was about 8 inches and female about 5 and they breed without any agression. There is no other reason I can think of for your problems.
