I have three jack dempseys, 1 female - 4inches about, 1 male - 4 inches about, and 1 2inchs -not sure about gender, a synodontis about 3.5 inches, 2 datnoids, - 1 inch and a snail (just got today but not sure if its moving or not). THey are in a 55 gallon tank.

I know I have to get rid of the smaller dempsey because the other two dempseys pick on that guy. (that dempsey was a test to see if it was female or male)

So, I want my female and male dempsey to pair up. However, they wont for some reason. They are both around 4 inches each. I have had my male dempsey since the beginning of my fish hobby, NOVEMBER 2006. And I got this female last month. WHen I added in the female, the male kept following her for a while and then stopped.

Why wont they pair up? What do I have wrong with my tank? Could It be water parameters? A friend of mine suggested doing a w/c and starving them to see if the male would start getting aggressive because my male is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY shy!!! It only comes out to eat food. and my female is out in the open here and there.

WHat can be wrong? PLease help me!

How long have they been together?sometimes these things take time:naughty:

Keep the water perfect and a good variety of food, and they may pair off.Or they might not sometimes fish need a few choics before they pick a mate

WHat do I have to do? Hold a gun to their fish heads and FORCE them to mate?!

Well, the female was added since a month ago. So they have been in the same tank for a month.

WHat I feed them are mainly freeze dried bloodworms and flakes. Once in a while Live brine shrimp.

try feeding them really rich food for about a week with some water changes to keep up with the added nutrients that you are giving them, and see what happens. Usually in the wild fish breed only when it is a time that their fry will have a chance to survive, so if not everything adds up you wont get fry.

I would say soem Brine shrimp.. Some Mysis as well and live nightcrawlers.. To start and see where you are at in a month .. Though I would be weary of the otehr smaller fish.. If the Dempseys breed you could lose those nice high dollar fish :)

Well, the male is nice and big w/ sharp fins. And the female has alot of greenish blueish spots on her gill plates.

Well, although JD's are monomorphic they do sometimes show slight coloration differences between the sexes. However, it is usually the males that show more color (spangles), not the females JD's. You will have better luck venting these fish compared to GT's or Convicts which are dimorphic and can be chosen based on color alone.

Well, from most people I got female more gill coloring and males are more bigger and fins sharper

I was also told that I should do a 50 percent water change, starve them for 2 days, then watch closely for male aggression.
