i have an 8 in jack dempsey and about a 4 to 5 inch female they stick together but havent layed eggs nor lip locked. is it the size differences or could they just not gotten to it. i water change and feed them bloodworms.

The size could be the problem. When I tried breeding jd I had a 3" female and 7" male and when she was ready he wasn't so when she tried laying he ate the eggs then killed her a few days after.

For some reason your story made me laugh.

I didn't think it was funny. Especially when I paid $70 for the pair

With most new world cichlids, I find it is best to have 3 or 4 females for every male. That way they can pair up naturally.
Just because you have a male and a female, does not mean they are a compatible pair.
Many new worlds also need target fish to help establish a pair bond.

That's true sometimes you get disfunctional pair like the one I had

yeah theres an oscar and a bluegill in there they get along really well but it seems she tries to bring him to the flat rocks i have and he heads that way and turns around and then she will try again
i hope he dont kill her if he does ill find a bigger female

can you put them in their own tank? it would be best if they were alone to increase the chances of a successful spawn.

Oh ok. Is your home warm? I ran a tank close to a month with a heater cause the one I had burnt out. As long as the room stays about 74° you will be ok the room temp will keep the tank temp.
