First a little background. I already had a 6" female Jack Dempsey (JD)...in a 55 gallon tank with some other fish. She was basically getting beat-up by two other fish in the tank...a 10" Oscar...and a very aggressive other cichlid. She was very shy...and always hiding in or around the caves I have in the tank.

Last Tuesday (1 week ago) I traded another local guy for an 9-10" male Jack Dempsey (although I didn't know it was a male at the time...unseen). I traded the guy the very aggressive cichlid that was bugging the female JD...for this male JD.
When I got home...and put the male JD into the tank...I swear it was love at first sight.:hearts: The female JD immediately started swimming side by side with the male JD. The male JD didn't seem to mind one bit (no aggression or chasing from him). She pretty much has been following him everywhere.:)

Since the two JD's seemed to be getting along well...I thought maybe there would be the possibility of them breeding. In order to greatly reduce the stress level...I decided to purchase a used 75 gallon setup for the 10" Oscar...and relocate him.

The 55 gallon with the both of the JD's in it...have been doing to a bunch of digging/nest building. Picking up the gravel with their mouths...and spitting it out outside of the caves. The female has been doing much more of this than the male (they have made five of these...one for each cave in the tank...and two in the open in the gravel). The male JD seems more preoccupied "fighting" his reflection in the aquarium glass.;)

So finally to my question. The two JD's in the 55 gallon have two tank mates (two female convicts). All 4 fish seem to be getting along very well (no chasing). If the two JD's do decide to mate/spawn...do the two female Convicts pose any problem?

Thanks

The convicts will try to eat the fry and maybe the eggs. The JD's will fight them off but you'll have some issues. If you really want to breed them let them have their own tank. I had a pair in a 55 that bred over and over but they had a couple of other fish with them and the little guys never made it until I gave them their own tank.

Thanks for the info.:) If moving the convicts would be better...that's not really a problem. I only left them in with the JD's just to add some extra interest in the tank. The two Convicts got along ok with my Oscar...so I could relocate them to the 75 gallon tank with him.

Thanks
