So I picked up a 6 inch male for 6 inch female jd cichlid. (that's the approximate length). The male is quite a bit stockier though. When I put them in my female(very aggressive for a jd) began swimming with him (instead of attacking). Both fish exibiting full color, they started doing this weird "dance" they puffed out their folks and spread their fins and made their whole body stiff and began doing this waving thing. It was like they were whipping eachother with their tails. Then they lip locked for a long time. Then the female retreated (showing the pale freaked out color) with her face all scratched up from the lip locking. Now (a few days later) they are swimming around together. Was this just initial aggression to a new tank mate or was it a breeding ritual? I really want them to spawn. Both fish are extremely colorful and I believe they would have excellent offspring. Also what are good tank conditions to expediate spawning (temperature, lighting if it makes a difference, rocks and decorations etc.). Thanks, I really want to have fry!
