New to jack Dempsey ciclids. I have 2 different jacks and not really sure of sex. Have had them since June 2016...rescued them as they were abandoned. Have them in the 70 gal. aquarium I rescued them in. They had been fine but for about a week they have started acting different, and have rearranged their gravel. Now they're fighting and the smaller one hide and doesn't come out to eat and is pale. It does eat crumbs occasionally that the other drops. Idk what the problem is.

Sounds like you're going to have to re home one of the jacks. How big are they? Aggression like that doesn't get better.

In nature pair of JDs will guard a 4ft x 4ft x 4ft area of about 250 gallons. I believe many aquarists think a small tank of 50 -75 gallons is enough (personally I don't, after seeing mature specimens in nature), diving with them in Mexico I find in small areas they get very torn up from fighting, but in large open areas, they do much better.
my first video is a small Cenote of only a few thousand gallons, you can see their fins are quite ragged.

the next video is a much larger Cenote, more the size of a small lake, where they are much more tolerant of each other

Jack demspeys are pretty easy to sex so some pictures would be useful.
Also jack demspeys can be really shy too. I know people here have seen them not be shy at all but they can definitely be fond of hiding.
