Fall River Ma.
hello, i am new to the site but i am already hooked!!! i have read so much great info on here it is an awsome place for a fish lover to be.
so my question is....
why is my jack dempsey black???
the fish stood out to me in the store because it was seperated from the rest because it was black and possibly getting picked on... i have had the fish for well over a month now and it has a great personality and appears as healthy as can be.
i had a hard time sexing it due to the coloration but after shining a bright light onto the fish i could make out a lime green- aqua undertone. i could see the gill plates were well marked so im guessing its a female.
so has anyone ever seena jack dempsey withthis coloration...she is literaly black 24/7 unlesss a broght light is shined on her to reveil the colors....the fish does however have a shiny blue spot o the gill as well as a vauge grey marking in the center of her body....

Personally, I think that is their normal color.
When I first got my JD, it was a light tan color. Now he is black with blue scales and looks very confident and whatnot. When stressed, he is tan with black blotches running down his body, but when he is in a good mood, he is really dark and the blue sticks out.

I noticed my JD has greenish coloration on his face too, but seems normal.

the way you spell coloration is strange lol jk.
but seriously.

ya this fish is black!!! pure as can be the only visible blue on it is the one small dot on the gill plate...i have searched the internet high and low for a similar color but cant find one nearly a dark..... i will try to get pics for tomorrow...!!!! its hard to get a detail pic due to the dark coloration...maybe i can net it and get the pic.... somecolor might show up because of the flash and make me look like a liar....lol...but we will see.

mine is as dark as can be. its a good sign. means you have a good dempsey. jeez people thats how dempsey's are supposed to look.

if that is how they are suppose to look then why is it that mine is the only one i have ever seen with the coloration???? i have seen thoulsands over the years and never one like this...
i always hesitated adding one to my tank because i wasnt crazy about thier coloration but this one is unique. i wish i had a pic this minute..

usually in the stores they are too stressed out and have a grayish color and alot of females stay that color. but when a male feels he is "the" fish in the tank he will always be black
