Hey again just got a pair of jack dempseys and I was just wondering do the males sometimes stay dark or do they color up with age. He has allot of the the irredescent yellow and blue spots but right now he is kinda black. He looked awesome in the pet stores tank

Congrats on your new pair. He should brighten up when he gets settled into his new home, and his colors will intensify with age. Good luck with them.

mine stays pretty dark with black and white gravel but he is the tank terror just showing his true colors
your fish might be stressed or angry/territorial
how big is your fish and your tank? whats stocked with it?

he should color up soon, looks good already. they really start to shine when they hit the 6" mark :)

how long did it take to get 4 1/2 inches.. and what diet mine eats blood worms frozen and dried with beefheart. sinking waffers and vegitable gum drops. is there anything eles i could feed him to have a healthy diet>?

Mine actually has a mate in there with him he is only about 4.5 inches. I heard something about them having an "ugly stage" on this forum. Could that be it because he really does have allot of that iridescent even when he was in a bag on his way home he was completely covered in that iridescent coloring they have.

Could it also have to do with his eating habits. He was apparently only fed feeders at my lfs (i know..... stupid) so that's the only food he really goes for, other than that he only seems to sift through the sand every once in a while so he cant be eating much. Will he grow out of this?
