How wide is the tank?
How well do the fish get on already? Are they a pair or not?
What kind of filtration and w/c schedule?

The answer is no. But if you did, and provided the fish already get along fine, this would not exactly be a life threatening situation to the fish.
Please get a bigger tank. They can be got really cheap from classified ads, friends and family, asking nicely on this forum (I'm sure someone may loan you one - we are all here to help each other out) and if you can only get another tank the same size, keep the 2 jd's separately but with the tanks side by side.

I would say no too a jd will grow fast maybe 5 inches in six months they may end up killing one another. If you want to keep jack dempseys get a bigger tank bottom line.

I would suggest against anything smaller.. Especially with a 20 g. and those sizes.. Your female won't run fast enough and the male at that size can pretty much go anywhere she can hence most likely sealing hre fate if the male gets Needy for breedy
In a fifty five at those sizes you would still need the general needs for a pair.. Which would be lots of hiding for the female to get away from the male.. And Floating plants also help with the overall temperment of these beautiful fish

I had my 8" male and 6" feamle in a 55 for a while.. Though i needed the space so they went into the community tank and are doing fine But the were more agressive to eachother in the 55 it was smaller... Hence my suggestion that a 20 is too small.. If you have no other choice and you already have the fish.. get a divider and work on pushing the 6 mos. to less than ...
The sooner you can get at least a 55 the better They run from free to 200.00 used..
If you come across the tank only and can afford just the tank... Just go get some cylinder blocks and place under it with a blanket for covering, til you can get a stand.. And use your equip from the 20 on the 55.
