Jack Dempsey food?

Hello, I'm new to the site. I have two Jacks, one is about 9" and the other about 7", along with two bullhead cats and a fourline pim. cat

I was wondering what I should feed the jacks to get the best color and keep them nice and healthy? They are also very skiddish and jumpy, what can I do to calm them down?

I feed every cichlid i have Hikari Bio Gold pellets. Frozen or freeze dryed krill is a good treat food

Bio gold, omega one, viggie pellets and what ever the other fish don't eat.

what should i do about them freaking out everytime I walk in the room?

How big is the tank? You could try adding some large decorations so they have somewhere to hide. A school of smaller fish might make them feel more secure as well.


Feed them standard cichlid stuff. Cichlid pellets, shrimp pellets, frozen stuff, etc.

i feed mine flakes, cichlid pellets, and bloodworms. for some stimulation i throw in toughies every once in a while but thats mostly it they eat everything

My JD's were absolutely crazy and freaked out everytime i walked into the room. I couldnt get them to eat because they would hide everytime I came in. I added a skoal of giant danios and it helped out alot. The more fish you have in the tank, the more comfortable the JD's get. I had to feed my fish at night because it was the only time they felt safe to come out when i was in the room. After awhile they got used to me and now they go crazy everytime i open up the glass hood to feed them, day or night!
