Hi guys, I have a beautiful pair of jack Dempsey who have just had their 4th lot of fry. All of the previous lots have died due to, other fish eating them (they have since been moved into a tank on their own) then the temperature of the water being too cold killed the next lot, but am not too sure what has happened to the others, and was looking for some advice so that this lot may survive. I was wondering if it was possible that the parents may have eaten their fry? How soon after they have hatched, should I remove them from their parents? Is there any other advice that anyone can give me about a breeding pair of jack Dempsey? This is the first time I have delt with a breeding pair of fish, and I am in need of some advice. Cheers

All of my fishes coped up in their first try but it may take them upto 4-5 tries max. to know what to do with the fries and how to care for them and yes it is possible for them to eat their own fry thinking that they are protecting their fry from other fishes.

Go barebottom, no substrates... use a slate for the bottom, provide plenty hiding spot for the female...and when they start pecking at the slate,...simply do a quick 20-30% water change, and let them do their things...once eggs are deposit it should hatch in two to three days... the eggs will look like it magically disappear..... dont worry, they hid the eggs... and in another 3 day or so... start making a batch of bbs, youll need it... on the 4th day or so..you shoujld see them free swimming...feed them bbs and you should see them swimming happily... after the second week, you can start feeding them crush flakes...
