Hi so i have a question about breeding jack dempsey. I have 2 pair right now which already laid eggs and the fry hatched and learning to swim. But i have no idea what they will come out as. can someone explain it to me?

I got a BGJD and a Gold Jack dempsey. and the second pair is EBJD and Gold JD.

what are the outcomes of the fry?

The BGJD and gold jd pair's fry should turn out with some EBJD around 12.5% I believe. Dunno how the gold factors into that pair. The second pair fry should be 50%BGJD and the rest a mix of normal and gold.

what color are the eggs?

You may be disappointed but all of these fry from both pairs will look like regular dempsey. They will carry the blue and gold genes though. Jack dempsey color morphs are all severely inbred so don't take it any farther.

He is right, the first cross will net you all JD's that carry the gold gene, and half will carry the EB gene but you won't know which do and which don't unless you breed individuals to something where you know exactly what alleles it has.

The second pair will get you all JD's that carry both the gold and the blue gene. Theoretically you could breed together the offspring from the second pair but since the EB gene is a weak gene because of inbreeding I wouldn't recommend it since you'll probably get some less than quality fish.

However, perhaps if you breed those two sets of unrelated offspring together and manage to hit the odds you might still be able to be getting a double het to double het breeding...this would require you to keep a good number of offspring from pair 1 though to grow out and successfully breed out, but hey, if you breed double het to double het you get all sorts of fun things like het gold, het EB (called Blue Gene), gold het BG, BG het gold, Electric blue het gold, Gold BG, and the highly coveted EBGJD.

Well they actually bred coincidentally.. I am actually not familiar with breeding cichlids except Angels... so it's a first for me. But I'm not really looking for anything of them. Just the experience I guess. But since it's so easy I was thinking maybe I should start lol

Well let's see how them come out. It's not like I'm planning on making much or anything of that matter. I might just trade them at monster for some food or w.e
